The story of the abacus begins not with beads and wooden frames, but with dust. The ancient Semitic word 'abq', meaning dust or sand, gave rise to the Hebrew word 'abaq', which referred to fine powder or dust. In the ancient world, one of the earliest ways to perform calculations was to smooth out a surface of sand or dust and trace numbers into it with a finger. The flat surface used for this purpose inherited the name of the material it was made of.
From Hebrew 'abaq', the word passed into Greek as 'abax' (ἄβαξ), which meant a flat slab, a board, or a table — particularly one used for calculations. The Greeks used these flat boards, sometimes dusted with fine sand, sometimes marked with grooves in which pebbles could be moved, to help with arithmetic. The Greek word 'abax' also came to describe the flat slab on top of a column's capital in architecture, a meaning that survives in specialist use even today.
Latin borrowed the Greek 'abax', adjusting it slightly to 'abacus', following the Latin habit of adding the '-us' ending to nouns absorbed from Greek.
