The story of 'analysis' begins on the shores of ancient Greece, with a verb so physical and concrete it might surprise you. The Greek word 'analyein' meant to unloose, to undo, or to set free — the kind of action you might use to describe untying a knot or releasing a prisoner from chains. It was built from two pieces: 'ana', meaning 'up' or 'throughout', and 'lyein', meaning 'to loosen' or 'to release'. From this vivid, hands-on verb, the Greeks formed the noun 'analysis', which carried the sense of a careful undoing — taking something whole and releasing it into its component parts.
The philosopher Aristotle was among the first to use the word in a formal, intellectual sense. For him, 'analysis' described the logical process of working backwards from a conclusion to find its basic premises — much like pulling apart a woven cloth to discover which threads were used. His famous works on logic were even grouped under the title 'Analytics', and this Aristotelian tradition meant that the word became deeply tied to the idea of rigorous, step-by-step reasoning. A chemist performing an 'analysis' was, quite literally, doing what the Greeks imagined: unloosening a compound into its original elements.
By the 19th and 20th centuries, 'analysis' had travelled far from both knots and chemistry. It entered psychology through Sigmund Freud, whose 'psycho-analysis' aimed to unloosen the hidden, tangled material of the unconscious mind. Today the word is used in business, sport, politics, literature, and everyday conversation. We ask for a 'news analysis', a 'risk analysis', or a 'data analysis' without giving a second thought to those ancient Greek hands, patiently working at a knot. Yet the core idea has never really changed: to analyse something is to undo it gently, piece by piece, until you can see what it is truly made of.
