Of course, the life in question is that of bacteria, not the patient — but the etymology makes no such distinction.

The Greek root βίος (bíos) has a remarkable history in the English language. By the 1950s, antibiotics were being described in newspapers as 'miracle drugs', and the word itself had become so familiar that people began to use it loosely — sometimes incorrectly applying it to antiviral medicines, which work on entirely different principles.
