The story of 'ceramic' begins in the dust and clay of ancient Athens, in a busy quarter of the city known as the Kerameikos. This neighbourhood, situated northwest of the Acropolis, was home to the city's potters, who worked along the banks of the Eridanos river where suitable clay was plentiful. The district took its name from the Greek word 'keramos', meaning potter's clay, earthenware, or a tile. The potters who worked there were called 'kerameis', and their craft — shaping wet clay and firing it in kilns — was one of the most important industries in the ancient world. Ancient Greek pottery, painted with mythological scenes and everyday life, is among the most celebrated art ever produced.
The Greek root 'keramos' is ancient enough that scholars believe it may have even older origins, possibly connected to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to burn' or related to the Sanskrit word 'śarāva', meaning a type of earthen dish. This hints at a deeply human, prehistoric connection to the practice of hardening clay with fire — one of the earliest technologies our ancestors ever mastered.
