From gravis, Latin speakers formed the abstract noun gravitas, meaning 'weight,' 'seriousness,' or 'dignity.' Gravitas was a prized Roman virtue — the quality of being weighty in character, slow to laugh, and worthy of respect. It was the opposite of frivolity.

The word moved from classical Latin into learned English during the 16th century, arriving as 'gravity' through the influence of scholars and writers who were deeply familiar with Latin texts. At first, it carried almost entirely the human meaning: the gravity of a judge, of a sermon, of a great occasion. It described solemnity and moral weight, not anything to do with falling apples or orbiting planets.

When we say someone 'failed to grasp the gravity of the situation,' we are using almost exactly the same meaning a Roman senator would have recognised. And when an astronaut floats weightlessly in orbit, defying gravity in the physical sense, we are touching a meaning that Newton himself shaped. The word carries its full history in both uses, reminding us that for most of human experience, heaviness of spirit and heaviness of body felt like the same deep truth.
