The word 'insect' is literally a translation of the Greek word for the same creature — both mean 'cut into sections', describing a body that looks notched in the middle.
The story of 'insect' begins with a simple act of observation. Ancient Greek philosophers, including Aristotle, noticed that small creatures like ants and beetles appeared to have bodies that were pinched or notched in the middle, as if someone had made a cut between the sections. Aristotle used the Greek word *éntomon* to describe them, from *en-* (meaning 'in' or 'into') and *temnein* (meaning 'to cut'). This gave us the idea of something 'cut into', referring to the segmented body visible between the head, thorax, and abdomen.
When the Roman scholar Pliny the Elder wrote his famous encyclopaedia *Naturalis Historia* in the first century AD, he wanted a Latin equivalent for Aristotle's Greek term. Rather than borrow the Greek word directly, he translated it piece by piece — a process scholars call a 'calque' or loan translation. The Latin verb *secare* meant 'to cut', and its past participle was *sectus*. Adding the prefix *in-* (meaning 'into') gave *insectum*, meaning 'something cut into' or 'notched'. Pliny used the neuter plural *insecta* as a category name for these creatures, directly mirroring the Greek *éntomon*.
The Latin *insectum* travelled through the centuries largely intact. It entered English in the early 17th century, appearing in translations of scientific texts and natural history writing. The naturalist Edward Topsell used it in his 1608 work *The History of Serpents*, and it quickly became the standard term in English for this class of creature. Before 'insect' arrived, English speakers had relied on the Old English word *wyrm* (worm) or simply described creatures by name, without a precise general category. 'Insect' filled a real gap in the language.
The Greek root that Pliny was translating — *éntomon* — did not disappear. It survived to give us the word 'entomology', the scientific study of insects, following the path Greek *éntomon* → modern Latin *entomologia* → English *entomology*. Meanwhile, the Latin root *secare* (to cut) spread widely through English via French and Latin, producing a large family of words: Latin *secare* → Old French *section* → English *section*; Latin *secare* → Old French *scie* → English *saw* (the tool); and Latin *secare* → French *segment* → English *segment*. Even the word *bisect* — meaning to cut in two — carries the same ancient blade.
It is quietly remarkable that a word describing one of nature's most abundant life forms is built entirely on a metaphor of cutting. The people who first named insects were not thinking about wings or antennae — they were struck by the waist, that dramatic narrowing between body sections that makes a wasp or an ant look as though it has been snipped by invisible scissors. Science and poetry have always been closer than we think, and 'insect' is a small but perfect example: a technical term that is, at its heart, a vivid image.
