The word 'palaeontologist' literally means 'one who studies the science of ancient beings' — a job title that did not exist until the 1830s.

The first is 'palaios' (παλαιός), meaning 'ancient' or 'old', a word the Greeks used to describe anything belonging to a distant past. The third is 'logos' (λόγος), meaning 'reason', 'word', or 'study', which the Greeks used to describe organised knowledge about a subject. Put together through New Latin, the compound 'palaeontologia' means, roughly, 'the study of ancient beings'.
The word entered scientific vocabulary in the early 19th century, a period of enormous excitement about fossils and deep time. The French naturalist Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville is often credited with coining 'paléontologie' in 1825, though the German scholar Ernst Friedrich von Schlotheim and others were working with similar ideas at roughly the same time. From French 'paléontologie', the word passed into English as 'palaeontology', and a person who practised it became a 'palaeontologist' — with the suffix '-ist' coming from Greek '-istēs', meaning 'one who does or practises something'.
The timing of the word's creation is not accidental. The early 1800s were the decades when scientists first seriously grasped that Earth had a vast history filled with creatures that no longer existed. Figures like Georges Cuvier had demonstrated that extinction was a real phenomenon — a shocking idea to many who believed creation was fixed and permanent. Suddenly, there was a whole new discipline needed to name and understand these vanished life forms, and so the language had to catch up with the science.
The spelling difference between the British 'palaeontologist' and the American 'paleontologist' reflects a broader pattern in how English was standardised on either side of the Atlantic. British English preserved the Greek diphthong 'ae' from the original 'palaios', while American English, influenced by spelling reformers like Noah Webster, simplified it to just 'e'. Both spellings refer to exactly the same word and the same scientific discipline — only the visual shape differs.
The root 'palaios' has given English several other words through similar scholarly routes. 'Palaeolithic' — from Greek 'palaios' + 'lithos' (λίθος), meaning 'stone' — describes the early Stone Age. 'Palaeography', from 'palaios' + 'graphē' (γραφή), meaning 'writing', refers to the study of ancient handwriting and manuscripts. Meanwhile, the 'logos' element has been extraordinarily productive in English, feeding into words like 'biology' (from Greek 'bios' → Latin 'biologia' → English 'biology'), 'geology' (from Greek 'gē' + 'logos' → New Latin 'geologia' → English 'geology'), and hundreds of other '-ology' words, all sharing that same Greek idea of organised, reasoned study.
