Freud's usage spread widely through the 20th century, and it is now the sense most people reach for first: slipping back to an older, less mature way of behaving. Today, 'regression' lives comfortably in several worlds at once — statistical, psychological, medical, and everyday. In medicine, a tumour can show regression when it shrinks. In software development, a 'regression' is a bug that reappears after being fixed. In everyday speech, we might say a country or a relationship has 'regressed'. Through all these uses, the original image quietly persists: something that was moving forward has turned and walked back the way it came.
