The mathematics itself is far older than the English word for it. Babylonian astronomers were working with angle relationships as early as 1800 BCE, and ancient Egyptians used similar principles in building their pyramids. However, it was Greek astronomers who first formalised the subject as a discipline. The astronomer Hipparchus of Nicaea, working in the 2nd century BCE, is often called the father of trigonometry. When European scholars translated Arabic mathematical texts into Latin in the 12th century, they misread 'jb' as 'jaib', an Arabic word meaning 'bay' or 'fold of a garment'. They then translated 'jaib' into the Latin 'sinus' — also meaning a fold or curve — and from this misreading, we get the English word 'sine'. It is one of the most charming accidents in the history of science.

The specific word 'trigonometry' entered written use in the late 16th century, appearing in the title of a 1595 Latin work by the German mathematician Bartholomaeus Pitiscus: 'Trigonometria: sive de solutione triangulorum tractatus brevis et perspicuus', which translates roughly as 'Trigonometry: or a brief and clear treatise on the solution of triangles'. Pitiscus did not invent the mathematics, but he gave the field its name. The word was quickly adopted into English — the first recorded use in English appears around 1614 — and soon spread across European languages as the discipline became central to the scientific revolution.

Over time, trigonometry grew far beyond its original purpose of measuring triangles. By the 18th century, mathematicians like Leonhard Euler had extended trigonometric functions into the realm of complex numbers and infinite series, revealing deep connections to the foundations of mathematics itself. Today, sine waves describe everything from sound and light to electrical signals. The humble triangle-measurer has become one of the most powerful conceptual tools in all of science, yet every time someone writes 'sin' or 'cos' on a calculator, they are unknowingly tracing a path back to Greek stargazers, Indian scholars, Arabic translators, and one very fortunate mistranslation.
